Lee and I worked together at all aspects of goalkeeping we built respect, a great working relationship and a lifelong friendship. These key developments formed the foundation for quality on pitch work.
Regarding on pitch work, Lee was a committed, enthusiastic, energetic and incredibly competitive coach. He wanted to get the best out of us to ensure we would have the best opportunity to win matches. In training sessions his competitiveness and winning mentality became ingrained in all the goalkeepers. As a result, the session quality really developed quickly as did the keepers.
To highlight Lees commitment, enthusiasm and desire to improve his keepers, I’ll share the following example.
One day he came to me with a key observation he made in his analysis of my training and match performances. He noticed that I had a lot of unnecessary movement in goal. He expressed that being ‘economical’ with my movements would allow me to be more effective in goal. For instance, to stay more central, get set sooner and in essence, stop chasing saves by making things easier for myself. This key intervention is one that I use in my game to this day. I would recommend Lee to any goalkeeper looking to improve.”
